Meet BC Tom, Marketing Intern

Lovepop Faneuil Hall Kiosk

Hi, I’m Tom, also known around here as BC Tom, and I'm a marketing intern at Lovepop. Currently, I’m a senior at Boston College, and this is my first true taste of what life after college will be -- and so far -- it’s wonderful.

As a kid growing up on the south shore beaches of Long Island, NY -- I always had entrepreneurial aspirations while basking in the sun. When I arrived at Boston College, that was truly when the startup fever hit me.

At BC I got involved with the Shea Center for Entrepreneurship. In recent years, I’ve been in charge of running the college’s Startup & Entrepreneurship Fair. That means countless interactions with various startups in industries ranging from one side of the spectrum to the other. The excitement that all of these people have for their companies is something truly amazing.

In early 2017, I decided I wanted to intern for a company that I truly believe in. I wanted to be able to get behind the company and believe in its mission. Entrepreneurial aspirations aside, I had a feeling of where I wanted to be.

As a 21-year-old junior in college, that’s tough – your options are relatively few, and you can’t necessarily pick where you go.

Luckily I met Lovepop.

There’s something to be said about giving and receiving cards. The look on people’s faces is wonderful when they open up a Lovepop – and it makes coming to work that much easier. Interactions like that are something beautiful. It’s something I can believe in.

To get here, I had to be persistent – just ask Veronica, she knows. 3 months later, I was here at the office and couldn’t be happier.

So what do I do?

A little bit of this, a little bit of that really.

Over the summer, I led our expansion into the realty card market -- real estate agents, I’m looking at you.  If you’re not familiar with the cards, check them out here.

In addition, I do some SEO and researching on Etsy. My goal is to make sure that our cards are one of the first listed items in certain searches with high performing keywords.  That’s the SEO part of it -- the researching part of it is in regards to finding new opportunities for our cards that could do well. A lot of these opportunities are more niche, but still do tremendously well. So if you see multiple listings on Etsy for the same card -- that’s just me.

The last thing I’ll tell you about is what my role is with Twitter. Most of my conversations before joining the Lovepop team were about increasing engagement, producing more content, and receiving more impressions. So that’s what I’m here to do -- to help with the strategy.

Hot Dog Stand Pop Up Card

Oh, and before I forget, you have to check out the Hot Dog Stand card. Easily my favorite. Why? I love hot dogs plain and simple. They're the best when grilled, but I have a special affinity for the hot dogs when you're in the city and get them all boiled up from a stand. I would even dare call myself a hot dog connoisseur.

Well, that’s me.  If you want to chat about cards, intern life, or anything really -- feel free tweet me @Thomas_Herer.
